Updates from the road of The World by Road

Forgotten Disputes

I am pretty sure that most people have no idea that there is a pretty heated border dispute going on between Belize and Guatemala. I had no idea. No one in the crew had any idea. But while the world moves on and focuses on other more pressing conflicts, the problems between Belize and Guatemala continue, sometimes with violent ramifications.

Nels’ Notes: Nomadic Wandering Shenanigans Feb 16-20, 2009

Monday we bid farewell to the gracious hosts at Decameron All Inclusive Resort and were off to the Guatemala border. We arrived late in what looked like a fortress, Antigua, Guatemala. In Antigua there are many ruins from Colonial churches dating back nearly 500 years. Tuesday marked the day of Steven Shoppman’s birth.

Nels’ Notes: Nomadic Wandering Shenanigans

This is Nels’ first attempt at summing up the week. It is actually my fault that it is up a week late as we were out of internet contact for the last few days and I forgot get it posted before we got out of contact. So this one if for a week ago and another one will be up in the next day about this last week. ~ Steve S.

The New Crew

You have all been introduced to Craig, and now we have Steel and Nels here as well. I think you may have noticed their names in some previous blogs, but now you can learn a little more with their bios that I managed to get online today.

Trek To The San Blas Islands

4:45 a.m. rolled around and it was time to get up. The great people at Luna’s Castle Hostel, in the Casco Viejo neighborhood of Panama City, set us up with a jeep ride to Carti to meet the rest of The World By Road crew for the first time in the San Blas Islands.

Sailing The Gap

It has been a time consuming and difficult process trying to find a way around the Darien Gap here in Colombia, but we have finally managed to bypass the gap and are going to do it in an exciting way. Dealing with the shipping companies in Cartagena has been pretty much par for the course in terms of mind numbing complexity and ridiculousness. The first several quotes we received for our 40′ container were well over $3,000.

Quick Update From the Road

Hello everyone, just wanted to fill you all in on what has been going on over the last few days. Currently, we are smack dab in the middle of Colombia in the amazing city of Medellin. Many of you may have heard of Medellin as a result of one of its most notorious residents, Pablo Escobar. Well, Pablo has been gone from the scene here for a while and as a result of a prolonged crackdown on crime and gangs by the current Colombian President Alvaro Uribe,(who also happens to hail from the area), Medellin is now a safe and surprisingly cosmopolitan city.

Expedition Stats Update

It has been a while since the last update so here are the updated numbers of miles driven, money spent on gas and the fuel prices in the countries we have been to here in south America. We have only driven through five countries in South America so far, but have covered more than 10,000 miles.

D-day came and went.

The last few days we have been at Tierra Del Volcan, which in English means, The Land of the Volcanoes. It is a partnership that Fundacion Paramo, an aid organization that works just south of Quito here in Ecuador, has set up with a few Haciendas around the base of Cotopaxi.

Feliz Navidad

It is that time of year. My mom regularly asks me for more info on what Christmas is like down here. How do they celebrate? What are you going to do for Christmas? This is now the second Christmas that we have been on the road. Last Christmas was in Europe so the similarities made it feel a lot like home.
