Updates from the road of The World by Road

Nels’ Notes: Nomadic Wandering Shenanigans April 5-12, 2009

It was another crazy week for us on the road. The week began in Austin at Hostelling International-Austin, where they graciously set up a dorm room/work room for us in their television room, and ended in one of the greatest cities in the world, Denver, Colorado. From Austin we made the 551 mile trek to Roswell, New Mexico, where UFO shops, museums and a research center showcase the 1947 Roswell UFO incident. A nice Days Inn on the main road through the town had both cable and high speed internet, so for the first time in awhile we were able to sit back, relax and got to watch the NCAA national championship game.

Welcome Home Exhibition

We have secured a location for the welcome home event. It will be at Club Vinyl at 1082 Broadway, 9PM April 17th. We have the whole rooftop available for the exhibition of our video, photos and stories and everyone is invited to come and see it all, meet the crew and see the trucks. The trucks will be parked out front of the venue on the street in the late afternoon and throughout the night.

To say this week was jam-packed would be a complete understatement. We began at a beautiful hotel in Chipinque National Park in Monterrey, Mexico, and ended the week in a hostel in Austin, Texas. Sunday and Monday night we had the pleasure of staying at Hotel Chipinque overlooking the city of Monterrey. It was a perfect place to relax, enjoy the views and prepare for our break for the US border. Our recently remodeled luxurious cabana had two living rooms, a kitchen, a dining room, a master bedroom, another room with two single beds, and an outdoor patio. The service, staff, food and accommodations were first class.

We are in the last few days abroad before we cross the border into the United States. Bouey’s quote of the week, puts our situation into a certain perspective. The trucks are very functional, but have seen better days. The absence of shocks in both vehicles makes the roads that much more interesting. The dashboard of the Tundra looks like Las Vegas.

Hasta Luego Melissa, Hola Celeste

It is a hard road out there. Nearly everyone has cracked at some point, including me and Bouey. We have had a handful that vowed a desire to finish the expedition with us, we have had a handful that realized quickly this was not for them. Being part of the crew is not like traveling, it is not like vacation, it is a job…without pay, other than the experience of a lifetime. And it is a seriously difficult job.

The crew and our week-on-the-road-warriors (Shoppman’s sister, Katie and her husband, Nate) awoke Sunday morning in our ocean-side rustic cabana in Nexpa. Nate did some masterful mechanic tricks on the Sequoia over the weekend, so we were set to head to Barra de Navidad.

There is no normalcy on the road. We’re always coming and then going, saying “hello” one day, and “goodbye” the next. It is how it has to be. On Sunday we awoke early in Merida with a long day of driving ahead of us, and had to say goodbye to the stellar Hungarian, Zsofi, who was with us for a five-week stint.

As we awoke on Sunday we said farewell to Placenia, Belize for a day on the road. We traveled from southeast Belize to the eastern city of Tulum, Mexico. Our 10 hours in the trucks were broken up by a really smooth border crossing in which the Steve’s, for the first time in the entire expedition, didn’t have to do anything with the trucks. No registering, no paperwork, nothing.
