Driving Around the World Just Got a Bit Easier

Driving around the world just got a little bit easier, at least one of the roughest 110 kilometers did. A major segment of the Republic of the Congo’s National Highway 1 has recently been completed and the route from Pointe Noire to Dolisie is now actually deserving of the designation highway. Back in 2008, it […]

Be More Than Just a Number

On October 31st, 2011, the world’s population eclipsed 7 billion people and although it’s purely coincidence that this milestone was achieved on Halloween, the thought of sharing the world with 6,999,999,999 other people can be a scary one. It’s hard to say exactly when baby 7 billion was born, where they were born and just […]

Meet, Plan, Go

Feel like your cube walls are closing in? Learn more about how to escape the grind and travel the world from people who have done just that. Steve and I will be at the Denver Meet Plan Go event on Tuesday October 18th. If you are not in Denver, don’t worry, this is a national […]

The Alaska Sea Life Center

“It won’t be so funny if he starts courting you,” said the intern. Meagan and I were laughing because a puffin had just hopped on her leg. We were taking part in the Puffin Encounter Tour, one of the programs offered by the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska. This particular hour long tour involved learning about the sea birds on display and then getting a chance to interact and feed the birds. Apparently, feeding the puffins is serious business as the seemingly harmless birds can bite extremely hard; although there are two expert interns there to protect you.

Two Wolves

My mother recently sent me this email. I thought I would share it with all the rest of you. One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said,

Real World Classroom

At a minimum, I would like to think that my grasp of world geography has received a nice shot in the arm as a result of our expedition. I can not even begin to estimate the number of hours I have spent over the last two years studying maps, guidebooks, and web pages as we planned

The Heat Is On

Spicy pepper heat that is. I am a spicy foods person. It does not matter what type of food it is, the spicier the better. Maybe it stems from my development as a child. When my brother and I were younger, if we were ever caught swearing in the house or around my parents, the punishment was a few dabs of Tabasco pepper sauce on the tongue.

My favorite last day of the year…ever.

The real blog will come later today or tomorrow.  We are about to leave Banos on our way to our next stop here in Ecuador meeting with an NGO that helps to preserve the rainforest.  Since nothing is open here on New Years Day morning, I am sitting outside a cafe on the sidewalk using […]

Keep on Crashing

I am sure everyone is anxiously watching the news outlets for glimmers of hope regarding the current global financial crisis. The value of people’s pensions plans are eroding, people are worried about having to work for another five years before they retire and Wall Street analysts and financial managers are wondering if they will have a job tomorrow. Actually, we here at the World by Road could not be more pleased with the current financial turmoil circling the globe.
