Nels’ Notes: Nomadic Wandering Shenanigans: March 21-28, 2009

We are in the last few days abroad before we cross the border into the United States. Bouey’s quote of the week, puts our situation into a certain perspective. The trucks are very functional, but have seen better days. The absence of shocks in both vehicles makes the roads that much more interesting. The dashboard of the Tundra looks like Las Vegas.

River Cave Adventure, Ian Anderson Style

Some of the most interesting things we’ve done recently have come completely out of nowhere. Such was the case when we entered Belmopan, Belize. Nothing at all was set up. We had some food in the back of the trucks, but it was getting late, and we had no place to sleep. Camping was an option, but there wasn’t any campsites in any of our guidebooks. Then we saw the sign, “Ian Anderson’s Cave Branch Adventure Company and Jungle Lodge.” We turned in to ask about camping and ended up being graciously accommodated with their bunkhouse and given a complimentary tubing tour the following day. Things were looking up.

24/7 means 24/7, that’s just how it is on the road. Our crew, by far, spends more time together than most spouses do. We eat together, spend the day together, work together, drive together, do activities together, and sleep in the same vicinity together. It is how it has to be. Yes, it takes it toll, but we need each other, that is for sure.

The crew and our week-on-the-road-warriors (Shoppman’s sister, Katie and her husband, Nate) awoke Sunday morning in our ocean-side rustic cabana in Nexpa. Nate did some masterful mechanic tricks on the Sequoia over the weekend, so we were set to head to Barra de Navidad.

There is no normalcy on the road. We’re always coming and then going, saying “hello” one day, and “goodbye” the next. It is how it has to be. On Sunday we awoke early in Merida with a long day of driving ahead of us, and had to say goodbye to the stellar Hungarian, Zsofi, who was with us for a five-week stint.

5 Star Time, Buckle Up, TWBR’s Here

Decameron All-Inclusive Resort was exactly the little break we were looking for. The weather was perfect, the beaches white sand, the ocean called us to swim, all-inclusive

As we awoke on Sunday we said farewell to Placenia, Belize for a day on the road. We traveled from southeast Belize to the eastern city of Tulum, Mexico. Our 10 hours in the trucks were broken up by a really smooth border crossing in which the Steve’s, for the first time in the entire expedition, didn’t have to do anything with the trucks. No registering, no paperwork, nothing.

Rain awoke the occupants of the big tent, Craig, Melissa, Steel and I, Monday morning, after a night of celebrating Melissa Terry’s 26th birthday in San Ignacio, Belize. Our destination Monday was a campsite 22 miles outside of the Caracol Ruins. The road made us feel like we were manning a jackhammer for a day.

Monday we bid farewell to the gracious hosts at Decameron All Inclusive Resort and were off to the Guatemala border. We arrived late in what looked like a fortress, Antigua, Guatemala. In Antigua there are many ruins from Colonial churches dating back nearly 500 years. Tuesday marked the day of Steven Shoppman’s birth.

This is Nels’ first attempt at summing up the week. It is actually my fault that it is up a week late as we were out of internet contact for the last few days and I forgot get it posted before we got out of contact. So this one if for a week ago and another one will be up in the next day about this last week. ~ Steve S.
