We have recently had the good fortune of spending the last week or so in the lap of luxury here in Central America. We have been hosted by some extremely hospitable people at eco retreats in Costa Rica during the past week, but it only really started to strike us how nice we had things when we were staring out over the waters of the Pacific Ocean from the back deck of the house we were staying at in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. Villa Noche in San Juan del Sur was no ordinary house.

Current Events in Central America
Here is a brief look at some of the things making news in this part of the world:
* Nicaragua has long been a country of rolling black-outs. As of the first of the year they are desperately trying to quell that problem by introducing a $90 million wind derived energy project. The 19 windmills have the potential to offer more than 6% of the nation’s energy needs by producing 40-megawatts of energy. Already this current project is
You have got to be kidding me
Sometimes I see the news and cannot believe my eyes. This post was from a little while ago, but I came across it again recently. On Facebook, people can create groups to talk about all kinds of silly things from cars to makeup to pop culture. Recently, some employees of British Airways started one to get together and compare stories of how much it sucks to deal with all the passengers getting on the plane.
The lighter side of Colombian current events!
When it comes to current events in Colombia, the hard-hitting and leading news pursued by the media is rarely positive. The problems here can still be quite severe, however, the nation is far less troubled than it was even 5 years ago. But as we experience more of this beautiful nation, it becomes apparent that daily life here maintains the same familiar values that are threaded throughout humanity…and more importantly Colombians not only love to have a good time, but they know how to have a good time! So in order to shy away from some of the more negative perceptions the world might have towards Colombia, here is a look at some of the more upbeat newsworthy topics sweeping the nation.
La Paz – la ciudad más loca del mundo
There is no doubt about it. La Paz, Bolivia is one of the craziest, most interesting cities I have ever been to. No other city seems to generate as many questions or spark more curiosity than La Paz. Sitting at just under 12,000 feet above sea level, the altitude alone makes La Paz a unique place and as a result, it is home to the highest pretty much everything.
Public Servants Strike Again… Literally
The list of quotes related to patience is just about as long as the situations in life you will undoubtedly encounter that require it. Problems are inevitable in life and having the patience to deal with problems as they arise will undoubtedly make your life easier. I knew that there would be a lot of situations that would require a lot of patience on this expedition, and I like to think that over the course of the last two years, I have become a much more patient individual. Just about every day on the expedition, something will come up that requires some degree of patience. Whether it is trying to communicate with someone in a foreign language about the simplest of things, or waiting for political issues in the country you are in at the time to run their course, having the ability to be patient can get you through a frustrating situation without doing any physical or emotional harm to yourself or anyone around you.
Keep on Crashing
I am sure everyone is anxiously watching the news outlets for glimmers of hope regarding the current global financial crisis. The value of people’s pensions plans are eroding, people are worried about having to work for another five years before they retire and Wall Street analysts and financial managers are wondering if they will have a job tomorrow. Actually, we here at the World by Road could not be more pleased with the current financial turmoil circling the globe.
The Overlander’s Guide to Last Minute Press Conferences
If you’ve got a story to tell, and you want the southern states of Argentina to be the first to know, then Esquel, Argentina should be your first stop! Speaking from experience, you’re going to want to head down to city hall (or wherever any major press conference is taking place) introduce yourself to at least one person with either a microphone, pen and paper, fancy hair do, etc. That is pretty much all it takes to get the attention of every other journalist in the vicinity. Don’t worry, they can resume their conference later.
New Photos – Volcano Chaitén
Melissa recently wrote a more objective point of view about the devastation left behind by the Chaitén volcano. More simply and more personally, all of us agree that this is one of the most devastating things we have ever witnessed firsthand. Just looking at photos or the video we will have up soon can only paint a small picture to the feeling that comes over you when entering a town that has been abandoned for all practical purposes …
New Photos – White Shark Diving
South Africa is one of the only places in the world where there is an abundance of Great White sharks. South Africa also happens to be one of the only places where they offer commercial cage diving so you can see these amazing creatures up close in their natural environment …
