{"id":1011,"date":"2008-09-30T08:58:50","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T13:58:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.theworldbyroad.com\/?p=1011"},"modified":"2008-09-30T10:01:11","modified_gmt":"2008-09-30T15:01:11","slug":"did-you-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theworldbyroad.com\/expedition\/2008\/09\/30\/did-you-know","title":{"rendered":"Did you know&#8230;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Or as I like to sometimes call them, DYKs.\u00c2\u00a0 Either way&#8230;After spending almost 6 weeks in one place there are a few things that you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t help but notice about a culture while also picking up some random trivia along the way.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing you will might notice upon your first visit to Argentina is that it won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take long to begin wondering why everyone in Argentina gives you funny looks when you order \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Pollo\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the typical Spanish dialect pronouncing it \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpoy-yo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00c2\u00a0 You then find out that in Argentina and most of Uruguay they refer to their Spanish as Castillano, where the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ll\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is pronounced with a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsh\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 sound.\u00c2\u00a0 In these two cases \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpollo\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 would be \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcposho\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0 and \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccastillano\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccastishano\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00c2\u00a0 Any \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is pronounced the same way.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, we hear &#8216;To-sho-ta&#8217; quite a bit when locals are referring to our Toyotas.\u00c2\u00a0 Grammatically speaking, this specific dialect also utilizes saying \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcvos\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 instead of &#8216;t\u00c3\u00ba&#8217;. \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Again, you will find yourself receiving odd looks for replying with &#8220;muy bien gracias <em>\u00c2\u00bfY t\u00c3\u00ba<\/em> ?&#8221; when a locals asks <em>&#8220;\u00c2\u00bfC\u00c3\u00b3mo est\u00c3\u00a1s?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are roughly 13 million people living in Buenos Aires and they&#8217;re known as &#8220;porte\u00c3\u00b1os&#8221;, meaning &#8216;people of the port&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Avenida 9 de Julio, which bisects Buenos Aires, is the widest street in the world boasting 16 lanes of sheer madness! &#8211; We drove it of course!<\/p>\n<p>When visiting Buenos Aires you should also be aware that 100 peso bills are the most common to receive out of an ATM, however you will find that no one will have the change to be able to break that bill.\u00c2\u00a0 Try paying for a 10 peso cab ride with 100 without getting some serious attitude from the driver-if he even has change at at all.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, it appears that the coins are more valuable than their paper money.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 So you can consider yourself a superstar for ever having correct change!\u00c2\u00a0 Otherwise, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re most likely to get some attitude yet again. For example, you might think you have lucked out when you have a 20 peso bill in order to buy something that costs 11.\u00c2\u00a0 Well, not quite, because you will get asked for that one peso coin so that they can give you a 10 back instead of having to dole out their coins and for some reason \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No, no tengo nada mas. Lo siento.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really cut it.\u00c2\u00a0 But you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll get used to it and as your confidence grows (after about week 4 or so) you can give your cab driver or the lady at the market a hard time right back.\u00c2\u00a0 You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll see\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6!<\/p>\n<p>The President of Argentina is Cristina Kirchner.\u00c2\u00a0 She is the wife of former President N\u00c3\u00a9stor Kirchner.\u00c2\u00a0 While she is the country&#8217;s second female President she is the first woman in history to succeed her husband as President.<\/p>\n<p>One of the world\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most famous football clubs, Boca Juniors, calls itself after the porte\u00c3\u00b1o neighborhood in which it was born, La Boca, situated at the mouth of the river on the southern edge of the city. The \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcJuniors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 was added to make the club sound more regal by simply adding an English language word.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The team is known for wearing blue and yellow but this was not always so.\u00c2\u00a0 In the 1920s they wore black and white like another porte\u00c3\u00b1o club (no longer around) until one day the two teams squared off to find out once and for all who would get to sport those colors.\u00c2\u00a0 Boca, being the losers, decided that their new colors would be the same colors as whatever country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flag was hoisted atop the next incoming ship.\u00c2\u00a0 That ship was Swedish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or as I like to sometimes call them, DYKs.
