Africa has been rough on both the trucks and the drivers here at The World by Road, but the wheels keep turning and the gas tab keeps adding up. Here are the most recent fuel rpices, and distances covered.

Getting into Africa has eased the burden on our pocketbook to a certain extent. Hopefully the days of six dollar and eight dollar per gallon fuel are in our rearview mirror. Fuel is still a little bit on the expensive side for our own liking here in Africa, but at least we hit a tax free zone in Western Sahara and were able to cut down our our consumption costs. Unfortunately, when one problem seems to be resolved, another one presents itself. Believe it or not, leaded gas is still in use throughout many parts of Africa even though it was phased out in the US decades ago. In some parts, leaded fuel is the only option aside from diesel… say for instance the entire country of Mauritania. Fortunately, we are able to carry about 400 liters of fuel and have only had to use leaded for a tank or two so the catalytic converters should not be effected too much.

Mileage, Fuel Consumption and Cost

While in Mongolia, Brendan (who was traveling with us at the time) and I had the unique and amazing opportunity to attend a traditional Mongolian wedding. The wedding took place in the countryside about 350 kms west of Ulaanbaatar. A traditional wedding lasts for about seven days and it was quite an experience. We made many new friends and definitely have some memories that will last a lifetime. Attending the wedding would not have been possible without our friend Jennie. If you are ever in Mongolia, look Jennie up… she works for Mongolian Resorts and you are guaranteed to have a great experience.

Also, we have been on the road for a little over 300 days now and have covered nearly 25,000 miles (40,000 km) which averages out to about 80 miles (128 km) per day of driving. Obviously we are not driving every day but do people ask us how long we spend behind the wheel and what our average speed is. So, ask and ye shall receive… sometimes…

A few posts ago I wrote about how expensive fuel is in Turkey. We are breathing somewhat of a sigh of relief that we are no longer forking over $10 per gallon for gas. Unfortunately, fuel is still pretty expensive here in the EU and we have updated the stats page with just how much it will cost you to drive here. Mileage and Cost

Earlier on Steve Bouey put together statistics about our fuel consumption and the cost of fuel in various countries. We have recently turned this into a static page on the site so that it is easily accessible to all of those adventurers out there that could use it.
